Winterization Tips for Vacant Homes

We have seen a number of situations over the years where customers leave their homes for an extended period for the winter without properly preparing their residence for the cold weather. This usually leads to big problems.

What often happens is that at some point the heating system stops working, usually due to a thermostat problem, a lack of fuel or a malfunctioning boiler or furnace. With no heat, water pipes can freeze and burst, resulting in costly water damage. We cannot be held liable for this unforeseen situation.

That’s why we strongly urge you to follow these winterization tips if your home is going to be unoccupied for any length of time.

  • Get automatic deliveries so your fuel tank doesn’t run out of oil.
  • Have someone check your home regularly and as often as possible.
  • Install a monitor that will send you an alert if the temperature inside your home gets too low. (Smart thermostats can also do this.)
