Water Heaters 101, Part 2: Fueling Options
In our last post, we talked about some of the factors you’ll need to consider when choosing a new water heater for your home. Among the most important of these is the type of fuel that powers it, which affects not only the costs to run the unit month, but also the size of water heater you’ll need and the efficiency you should expect.

- Electric powered – A reliable, low-upfront cost choice for many homes, electric powered water heaters are available in both storage models and as heat pump hybrid systems, which absorb ambient heat and transfer it to the water.
- Fuel oil powered – Heating oil-powered water heaters are available in standard and on-demand (tankless) configurations. Tankless heating oil-fueled systems are great for newly constructed homes, for efficiency-minded families, or situations where space is at a premium (since they have no tank, they take up far less space – they’re about the size of a suitcase and can be wall mounted).
- Gas powered – Propane- and natural gas-powered standard and tankless models are great, high-efficiency options for your home water heating.
