Is It Time to Replace Your Toilet?

Your toilet is one of the most important plumbing features in your home – an appliance you probably take for granted even though you use it every day.

Because you take it for granted, you’ve probably never thought about replacing it, either. But there are some cases where getting a new one makes sense.

For example:

  • When they develop cracks or leaks – Many toilets develop hairline cracks that can eventually become leaks. A plumber can fix many of these cracks, but some can become so severe that replacing the toilet makes more sense.
  • When they’re unstable – If your toilet wobbles, it may have simply come loose from its base. But the instability also could be caused by something worse – a rotting floor underneath the bowl, for example. The best way to find out is to remove the toilet. If the floor is the culprit, you’ll need to examine the plumbing to make sure the leak doesn’t return.
  • When they’re inefficient – If your toilet is more than 20 years old, chances are it was produced to lower efficiency standards than are required today. Many of today’s toilets have flush ratings of 1.28 gallons or lower – about one-quarter less than older models. Dual-flush toilets, which offer different volumes of water for solid and liquid waste, are also an option.
  • When they no longer match your décor – If you’re planning a bathroom remodel, you might want to splurge on a stylish new toilet. Today’s designs offer flexibility in size, shape, and height to make your time on the throne more comfortable than ever.
