4 Questions to Ask Your Heating or A/C Contractor before You Hire Them
In life, getting what you want often comes down to asking the right questions. It’s also true when it comes to hiring a heating or air conditioning (HVAC) contractor for your home.
Finding a good HVAC technician is critical – they can help your system run well for longer, which will help keep your home comfortable and your bills low.
As with any investment, It pays to shop around – so talk to several contractors before you hire someone. Here are 4 questions you should ask a HVAC technician before bringing them into your home:
- Are they licensed and insured?
Most states require HVAC technicians to be licensed. Make sure your candidate is by taking their license number – you can then look it up via your state contractor licensing board. If they can’t produce a license number, think long and hard about hiring them (we know we wouldn’t).Also make sure your HVAC contractor is insured, just in case something goes wrong while they’re working in your home. Ask for proof of insurance for both worker’s compensation and liability to avoid incurring any expense in the event of an accident on your property. - How long have they been in the heating and cooling system business?
Knowing how much experience an HVAC technician has can help you feel more comfortable about hiring them. The industry is full of fly-by-night operators – protect yourself! - Can they provide references from previous customers?
Talking to past customers can give you peace of mind. If they can’t or won’t provide references or reports from other customers, it’s probably a good idea to hire a different technician. - How will you work with my warranties?
If your current heating or cooling system is under warranty, a good HVAC technician will make sure he does what’s needed to keep it in force and prevent voiding it. If your system is past warranty, ask about what guarantees they make about the work they perform – and make sure to get it in writing!
