FAQs About Humidifiers

Why do I need a humidifier?
Installing a humidifier can make a huge difference in your family's comfort. Homes with the proper level of humidity actually feel warmer and more comfortable than dryer homes, even when the thermostat is set at a lower temperature.

Here are just a few of the benefits of having a humidifier:

  • Elimination of dry air and creation of a more comfortable environment.
  • Relief from dry skin, hair, and nails.
  • Relief from dry throat.
  • Reduction in static shocks.
  • Preservation and protection of wood fixtures, artwork, and wood and leather furniture.
  • Protection of computers and other electronic equipment.
  • Reduction in energy bills.

How can my humidifier save me money on my energy bills?
When the humidity in your home is at the optimal level (between 40% and 60%), your home actually feels warmer, even at lower temperatures. The money you save in setting back your thermostat a few degrees can actually pay for the cost of a humidifier, over time.

Will an Aprilaire humidifier cause mold in my home?
No. An Aprilaire humidifier will never contribute to the growth of mold, when installed, operated, and maintained as recommended.

Aprilaire humidifiers are designed to accurately control the level of humidity in the home. This is accomplished by the use of an outdoor temperature sensor that communicates with the computer equipped control over 345,000 times per day. In conjunction with a precision humidity sensor which samples the air coming back to your furnace, the Aprilaire Automatic Humidifier Control responds immediately to changing outdoor conditions. Remember, it’s just as important to shut the humidifier down when the humidity control reaches its set point as it is to deliver even more comforting humidity to the home when it’s warmer outside. The models 400, 600, and 700 come with this automatic humidifier control that allows the humidifier to deliver the optimum amount of humidity based on outdoor conditions. This will typically range from 20% on a really cold day to as much as 45% when it’s warmer outside. This is of importance because industry data shows that mold does not grow in humidity levels below 60%.

What should I do to properly maintain my humidifier?
You will need to replace the humidifier's water panel and clean the scale control insert, floats, and float chambers once a year, if you have an Aprilaire Model 600 or 700, and twice a year, if you have an Aprilaire Model 400. This simple maintenance procedure can be completed in less than 10 minutes. We recommend doing this either prior to the start of or at the end of the heating season.

Where can I buy humidifier replacement parts?

Should water be draining from my humidifier?
Yes, water should drain from your humidifier, because all of the Aprilaire flow-through humidifiers incorporate a self-flushing action. This action flushes down the drain many of the mineral deposits left on the water panel from the evaporation process. This helps to minimize the amount of maintenance required.
